Industrial zones to be established in Sri Lanka's Eastern and Northern provinces

Mar 23, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is taking measures to establish four new industrial zones in Eastern and Northern Provinces to uplift the economy in the region deteriorated by the 30-year long war.
According to the Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Industrial Development W.D. Jayasinghe the industrial zones in the Eastern Province will be set up in Trincomalee and Batticaloa while the zones in the Northern Province will be in cities of Jaffna and Mannar.
The industrial zone to be set up in Trincomalee on 50 acres of land will have 30 industries while a 25-acre land has been identified to establish an industrial zone in Batticaloa town to set up 15 new industries.
A land has already been identified to set up the industrial zone in Mannar. The lands for the industrial zone that will be set up in Jaffna are now being identified. It will be established in addition to the Achchuweli industrial zone.
The Ministry has implemented a programme with funds from the United Nations to support the small and medium scale entrepreneurs in the Northern Province the Ministry Secretary said adding that the Ministry is in the process of providing the businessmen in Mannar with guidance and information to begin new industries.
