Sri Lanka's main opposition finds it beneficial to have a UPFA President and UNP government
Mon, Mar 22, 2010, 07:24 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Mar 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) said today (22) that a UPFA President and a UNP led government would be the best option for the country.
UNP Spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told the media that the Executive Presidency and a two thirds majority to the same party would place the country in an undemocratic path. He noted that a UNP led government could counter if necessary the ill effects of an Executive Presidency.
He said the country would prosper under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's leadership and a UNP led government as it would benefit both the UPFA and the UNP.
Karunatileka had also observed that a UNP led government with incumbent President Rajapaksa as the Executive would also minimize any undemocratic moves made by both parties.
