* English language compulsory for all university students in Sri Lanka

Mar 21, Colombo: In an effort to prepare the Sri Lankan university students to meet the global challenges, learning English language would be made compulsory for all the university students, Minister of Higher Education Prof. Visva Warnapala said.

According to the Minister the students who enroll in universities will have to study English as a compulsory subject from the first year.

The Minister highlighted that the knowledge in English will be instrumental for the university students to prepare themselves to face the new world trends and the job market and they need to be equipped to meet today's challenges.

The program aims to provide a wide knowledge in English, the Minister said. Sri Lankan Universities will also be upgraded to the level of foreign universities, he added.
