Cooperatives to purchase paddy from Sri Lanka farmers

Mar 20, Colombo: Sri Lankan government has decided to provide grants to Cooperatives to purchase the paddy harvest from the farmers to ensure a fair price for their crops.
The government has taken this decision following a meeting with District Secretaries. An allocation of 500 million rupees has already been made to purchase the paddy.
A kilo of the Samba variety will be purchased at 30 rupees while the Nadu variety is purchased at 28 rupees a kilo.
The Treasury said that the new programme is in place in addition to the purchases made by the Paddy Marketing Board under the Guaranteed Price Scheme. The programme is being considered at all Agrarian Services Centers and Regional offices of the Paddy Marketing Board.
