Fri, Mar 19, 2010, 09:48 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 19, Colombo: In an effort to reach out to the Tamil community of the country, Sri Lanka police has taken measures to establish special units to take complaints and statements in Tamil language.

Four police stations in Colombo have opened Tamil language units to serve the minority Tamils and more such units will be opened in the future, a BBC report said.

According to the report some of the units are staffed by Tamil policemen and women and others by Sinhala officers trained in the language.

Although the Tamil was an official language most government offices use the majority language Sinhala or English.
