* Sri Lanka President inaugurates ruling party election campaign from hill capital of Kandy

Mar 19, Kandy: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon inaugurated the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance campaign rally from Kandy, the capital of Sri Lanka's hill country.

Before the rally, President Rajapaksa visited the Most Sacred Temple of the Tooth and the temples of the two main Buddhist chapters Malwatta and Asgiriya and observed religious rituals.

The President presented a Buddha statue to the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera to mark his 80th birthday.

He presented Ata Pirikara to the Anunayake of Malwatta Venerable Panditha Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera.

The President also spent a few moments greeting the devotees and foreign tourists to the temple. Kandy district candidates accompanied the President during his visit to the temples.

Later, President Rajapaksa was scheduled to address the first of the 26 main rallies scheduled by the ruling alliance to be held in all the districts of the country.

The Alliance will hold 25 other mass rallies island wide under the patronage of the President. One public rally will each be held in 20 of the 22 districts while two rallies each will be held in Colombo and Kurunegala districts.

In addition 76 rallies have been organized in all electorates under the patronage of Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka.

The UPFA also plans to carry out house-to-house awareness campaign. Accordingly, the UPFA has organized over 40,000 rural and estate level pocket meetings.
