Mar 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition, United National Party today (18) launched a special manifesto for women titled, "She who brings victory to the country" at an event held in Colombo.
Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the UNP was fielding women from 10 districts at the April 8 general elections and in the future the party hopes to increase the percentage of female candidates.
"Females who make up around 53 per cent of our population contribute immensely to the country’s economy. The main contributors are from the apparel and foreign employment sectors. We propose to increase another two percent as incentive to the remittances sent to Sri Lanka by those females employed in West Asian countries," he said.
Wickremasinghe pledged to fulfill all the promises in the women's manifesto by 2012.
