Mar 15, Kalutara: The Magistrate Court of Kalutara today directed the children of a mother suspected of attempting to drown her three-year-old son to the care of the Probation and Child Care Department.
The 30-year-old woman was arrested and remanded yesterday. Police say that she has confessed to throwing the child to the Kalu Ganga after failing to abandon him near the Kalutara Bodhiya sacred shrine.
Kalutara Additional Magistrate Namal Perera remanded the woman till March 26.
The suspect is a single mother lived in a village for tsunami victims in Panadura and made a living out of selling lottery tickets. She told police that her husband had abandoned her and she faced utmost difficulties in taking care of her five children.
Her other four children, one boy and three girls were handed over to separate children's homes with a condition of allowing them to unite once a week.
Meanwhile, the child who was floating in the river and saved by a truck driver is still in critical condition in Colombo Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital.
The doctors say his prognosis was not good as the child had not been given proper first aid since the rescuers were not trained in them, said the hospital sources.
A private TV channel recorded and aired the rescuing incident.
