* Sri Lanka police seize largest ever heroin haul

Mar 12, Chillaw: Sri Lanka police seized 240 million rupees worth of heroin in Muthupanthi area of Nalladarankattuwa in Chilaw, 45 miles north of capital Colombo.

Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Prishantha Jayakody said Kalpitiya police seized the largest-ever stock of heroin that weighed 40.8 kilograms.

According to the police spokesman, the police conducted the raid following the information received from interrogating a suspect who was recently arrested for drug trafficking.

The suspect arrested earlier this month at the Bandaranaike International Airport while trying to flee to India was wanted in connection with another seizure of heroin weighing 30.6 kilograms in Mundalama last month.

According to the police, a drug smuggling ring is operating in the seas off the country's northwest coast with traffickers getting the drugs from the dealers in the mid sea and distributing them through the fishermen.
