Mar 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauf Hakeem will be provided with four police personnel for his security, the Attorney General's Department informed the Supreme Court today.
The counsel for the government informed the court that Hakeem will be provided with one sub-inspector, two police sergeants, and one constable when the petition filed by Hakeem seeking more security was taken up by the Supreme Court today.
However, Hakeem's lawyers have sought five security personnel and the Court has directed the AG to explore the possibility of meeting the request.
When the parliament was dissolved in February, the Police Department terminated the security given to the parliament members as they were no longer eligible for the privilege.
The MPs filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to reverse the decision. However, with the reconvening of the parliament Tuesday, the MPs are again eligible to receive the security unit the parliamentary elections.
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress is a constituent party of the Ranil Wickremasinghe led opposition alliance, United National Front.
