Tue, Mar 9, 2010, 10:49 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's dissolved 6th parliament reconvened today to extend the Emergency Rule for another month.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa dissolved the parliament at midnight on February 9, through a special gazette notification.

The Emergency Law which gives wide powers to the government is renewed every month by a parliamentary vote. President Mahinda Rajapaksa called the dissolved parliament to reconvene since the current state of emergency was to expire on March 5.

Under the Constitution the President has the authority to extend the Emergency Rule for another month, but it has to be ratified within ten days by the parliament.

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) said it would oppose the extension of the state of emergency in the run-up to the April 8 elections.

Once reconvened, the parliament will be in session until the election day on April 8. The new parliament is to meet on April 22.
