Mar 08, Colombo: A fundamental rights petition is to be presented to the Supreme Court today (08) seeking the cancellation of the nominations list submitted by the main opposition UNP for the Monaragala District.
SLFP (M) wing member Tissa Kuttiarachchi, whose name was allegedly removed from the UNP Monaragala District nominations list before it was handed over to the District Returning Officer, is to file a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of the party's Monaragala District list or the inclusion of his name in it.
Kuttiarachchi has said that he would file the petition in Supreme Court as the Elections Commissioner had informed the UNP Secretary General that once a nominations list was accepted by a Returning Officer, it was only a court verdict that could either enable him to include a name in the list or cancel the list altogether.
The party leadership has accused the former UNP Monaragala District parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara of altering the list before submission and removed him from his post as the party leader in the Monaragala district.
