Mar 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling party, United People's Freedom Alliance is to launch a series of campaign rallies around the country beginning next week ahead of the general elections to be held on April 8th.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena speaking at a press briefing in Colombo this morning said the rallies will be held in every district under the patronage of the President and the Prime Minister.
The ruling party kicked off its election campaign on February 27 with religious observances from the historic city of Anuradhapura. At the occasion all the UPFA candidates pledged to carry out a free and fair election.
Meetings at electoral and divisional level are already being held, while there are also pocket meetings, the Minister informed.
The Minister said the main opposition is fragmented and the voters who voted for them at the president elections are now joining the ruling party in large numbers and expressed optimism that the UPFA will secure a historic win on April 8th.
Meanwhile, the leader of the National Freedom Front, a constituent party of the ruling alliance, Wimal Weerawansa said the UPFA faces no challenge in wining the general election as the opposition parties UNP and the JVP are politically bankrupt and have been unsuccessful in taking correct decisions on behalf of the country.
