* A programme to trace all archaeological sites in Sri Lanka
Fri, Mar 5, 2010, 12:23 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Cultural Affairs and national heritage has launched a programme to trace the island wide archaeological sites.

This long term project aims to inventory all ancient sites and monuments in Sri Lanka. Currently sites and monuments in the North Western Province are being inventoried.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Wimal Rubasinghe said that 250,000 such sites have already been identified. Investigations are ongoing to identify further sites. The identified archaeological sites have been listed officially.

The Secretary Rubasinghe appealed to the public to support the efforts in safeguarding these national treasures since the Ministry alone cannot preserve them from treasure hunters who often vandalize these places in search of hidden treasure.
