Mar 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the nation can overcome any challenge whether it is on land, sea, or space and march towards prosperity.
Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Coast Guard Department at the inauguration of the Maritime Archaeology Museum in Galle this morning the President said the Sri Lankans should reap dividends of prosperity after the long drawn war.
President Rajapaksa pointed out that the Sri Lankan economy can enjoy a great deal of benefits from the Indian Ocean and the government has taken measures to explore the sea bed for petroleum deposits and other natural resources.
The President noted that the Coastal Guard Department is bound to render a great service to the country in this regard.
The Coast Guard unit, earlier attached to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry came under the Defence Ministry in July last year. It provides a multi-mission service to ensure the security of the coastal areas, the maritime zones, the territorial waters of Sri Lanka and the high seas.
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, and Director General of the Coastal Guard Department Rear Admiral Daya Dharmapriya were also present at the event.
