* New crisis in Sri Lanka opposition party
Thu, Mar 4, 2010, 07:18 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka opposition United National Party (UNP) is again in crisis due to an alleged unauthorized change that occurred in party nominations for Monaragala district.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party People's Wing led by Mangala Samaraweera, a coalition party of the United National Front, accused the district leader of Monaragala MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara for unauthorized removal of the name of People's Wing candidate Thissa Kuttiarachchi from the nomination papers.

The candidate said that his name had been removed from party nomination papers using a correction fluid and a name of another person had been added to replace him.

Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the UNP executive committee will take up the matter at the meeting on March 6. The executive committee can decide to initiate legal action against Madduma Bandara.

Meanwhile, the accused MP says that he has been axed by party based on a complaint lodged against him by a person who has even no vote in the district. He says that there is a coup against him since he campaigned in the party to bring Sajith Premadasa to the party leadership.

Premadasa is the son of the former President Ranasinghe Premadasa who was assassinated by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber on May 01, 1993.
