Sri Lanka parliament to reconvene next week to pass Emergency Rule

Mar 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka's dissolved legislature will reconvene on March 9 to extend the Emergency Law by another month, government sources said,
The Emergency Law which gives wide powers to the government is renewed every month by a parliamentary vote. The current state of emergency is to expire on March 5.
Under the Constitution the President has the authority to extend the Emergency Rule for another month, but it has to be ratified within ten days by the parliament.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa dissolved the parliament at midnight on February 9, through a special gazette notification.
The elections for the new parliament to be held on April 8 and it is scheduled to convene for the first time on April 22.
