Sri Lanka digitalizes immigration and emigration data

Mar 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration has opened an electronic data base for the passport documents.
A statement released by the Prime Minister's office says that eight million documents will be entered in to the data base to enable fast access in future. The documents of past 12 years are to be made digital.
Sri Lanka government has allocated Rs. 25 million for the project.
Department of Immigration and Emigration handled 1,529,619 arrivals and 1,565,341 departures in 2007 according to available statistics in the National Centre for Migration Statistics.
International labour migration from Sri Lanka has grown remarkably over the last decades, with numbers increasing more than tenfold, according to the Central Bank, Annual Report 2008. The total number of migrants from Sri Lanka on employment abroad is estimated at 1.8 million. Annual outflow of workers is about 250,000 people.
