Supreme Court orders AG to explore security options to former MPs of Sri Lanka

Mar 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka Supreme Court today ordered the Attorney General to explore the possibility of granting some security to the former parliamentarians.
A three-judge bench headed by the Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga gave this order the court heard the petition filed by 17 members of the dissolved parliament against the withdrawal of their security.
The State counsel informed the Court that the legislators are not entitled for the privileges of security after the legislature was dissolved. However, the Inspector General of Police is looking into the provision of security to party Secretaries and the leaders, the counsel informed the Court.
The Attorney General (AG) has informed the Supreme Court that there is no legal basis to restore security withdrawn from former parliamentarians.
