Jan 31, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to improve the aging power transmission network in rural areas of the country with the support from the Asia Development Bank.
The Ministry of Power and Energy said the present power transmission network which was over 60 years old cannot handle the present day needs.
The government has indicated to the ADB the urgent need for investment in the transmission system that was neglected for a long time.
Under the ABB-funded Sustainable Power Sector Support Project (II), the government plans to strengthen the system in the Southern, Eastern, and Northern parts of the country.
Selected transmission networks in Ampara and Valachchenai in the Eastern Province and also in Panadura, Veyangoda, Matara, Kurunegala, and Horana are slated for the improvement.
The project aims to provide an efficient service minimizing power wastage which occurs at substations due to the outdated power transmission network.
The proposed grant amount for the project is US$ 90 million. The main goals of the project are to improve the quantity, quality, and cost of service delivery, and to increase electricity connections in rural areas.
The government plans to provide electricity to 86% of households by 2010 and 98% by 2016.
