Jan 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister has invited the expatriate Tamils to help the Sri Lankan government to develop Jaffna, the Tamil stronghold in the North into a commercial hub.
Speaking at a ceremony held at the Jaffna Public Library yesterday, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the Diaspora Tamils could contribute to the development of the region, especially Jaffna.
Jaffna has seen increased economic activity following the opening of A-9 main Jaffna-Kandy highway that connects the peninsula to the capital Colombo.
The Sri Lankan government has implemented a massive development program for Jaffna under the Northern Spring program to build infrastructure and roads in the peninsula and also to provide additional facilities to the Jaffna University.
The World Bank recently approved US$20 million under its Provincial Roads Project to rebuild about 100 km of provincial roads and other road infrastructure in selected, prioritized areas of Jaffna District.
Bogollagama toured the Jaffna peninsula and the Northern region visiting IDP camps. He visited the Nagadeepa Temple on Nainativu island of Jaffna and also observed religious rituals at a Kovil in Jaffna.
Social and Welfare Services Minister Douglas Devananda accompanied the Foreign Minister at the ceremony.
