Jan 31, Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities have handed over a batch of 56 rehabilitated LTTE cadres to their parents recently.
Former Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Major General Daya Ratnayake released the former rebel soldiers, who underwent the rehabilitation program for a year at the Nawasenapura Rehabilitation Centre at Welikande, to their parents.
Many of them abandoned the rebel outfit and surrendered to the government forces at the height of the war. The government launched a programme to rehabilitate them so they have better prospects for their future.
The one-year rehabilitation program provides vocational training to the former rebels in areas such as information technology, sewing, plumbing, electric work, carpentry, mason work, welding, metal work, etc. with the expectation that they can earn a living once they are integrated into the society.
Last Wednesday (Jan 27) 25 LTTE cadres in Jaffna who received the one-year rehabilitation reunited with their next of kin.
