Jan 30, Colombo: Sri Lankan government embarking on a vicious vendetta against the common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka is undemocratic and conspiratorial, the main opposition leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe says.
The government by these raids and arrests is trying to obstruct the defeated candidate's future course of action against the election results that is surrounded by grave doubts and suspicion with massive allegations of vote rigging and manipulation by the government officials, Wickremasinghe said Friday addressing a media conference.
"It is the duty of a democratic government to ensure the safety of all opponents and their supporters after an election when feelings run irrationally high. Hence, the government following a blood thirsty revengeful attitude against Gen. Fonseka only because he opposed the President at the Presidential elections cannot be justified at all under any circumstance," he said.
The opposition leader said some ministers and their supporters stormed election offices and took control of them and the Elections Commissioner who expressed disgust at the manner in which State officials violated election laws also made mention of these election day incidents.
However, the Election Commissioner and both international and local poll monitoring groups expressed satisfaction that the polls were free and fair, a conclusion, even the opposition leader had acknowledged soon after the elections.
Election officials have totally dismissed the opposition's allegations of vote manipulation by the computer saying that votes were also counted manually.
Local and overseas political analysts say it is impossible to manipulate the massive margin of victory, nearly 2 million votes, the President received at the elections,
