Sri Lanka police seal Marxist newspaper office

Jan 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka police shut down the office of the Marxist party tabloid today following the arrest of its editor yesterday.
Police media spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) sealed the office premises of the Lanka, a weekly tabloid controlled by the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna on court order pending investigations.
The CID yesterday arrested the Chief Editor of the newspaper Chandana Sirimalwatte over an article published last Wednesday about a property which the newspaper had claimed belonged to a senior government official.
Meanwhile the Paris-based right group Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF) urged the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to respect the press freedom and end the intimidation of journalists working for privately-owned and foreign media.
The government has taken measures to crackdown on false reporting and spreading of malicious rumors by the opposition using media against the government and its officials.
Defence authorities earlier arrested three people for spreading rumors against the government and the President through the mobile Short Message Service (SMS).
