Jan 30, Colombo: The two crossed-over opposition stalwarts, Minister Johnston Fernando and former Deputy Mayor of Colombo Azath Salley urged all the political parties to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa to steer the country towards prosperity.
Addressing a media briefing yesterday in Colombo, the two opposition United National Prty leaders who crossed over to the government side last month said the President has already scored a huge victory over the opposition candidate.
Speaking of the opposition UNP, the Minister said the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe is not interested in the future of the party and will not offer his optimum service to the UNP or to its members.
A large number of party stalwarts including members of provincial councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas have joined the government, Minister Fernando revealed.
Minister Johnston Fernando said details of a conspiracy by the Fonseka's camp to assassinate the President, Defence Secretary and a number of ruling party supporters have come to light.
The opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has sacrificed General Sarath Fonseka to secure his portfolio as opposition leader, the Minister charged.
Minister Fernando asserted that the UNP will have a dark future if Ranil Wickremasinghe continues to be the party leader.
