Jan 30, Colombo: A healthcare review meeting led by the Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva has decided to hand over the healthcare services at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to the Northern Province Governor.
The Committee has taken the decision to withdraw the healthcare facilities at IDP camps as the number of displaced people have been reduced to 90,000 from a peak of nearly 300,000 last May.
The Minister has directed to withdraw the health officials at the camps and handover the services to the Northern Province Governor from 1st of February 1, Ministry spokesman W.M.D.Wanninayaka said.
According to the Ministry spokesman, the Ministry has spent 30 million rupees a month to provide healthcare facilities to the IDPs.
At the peak time the camps had a staff of 410 and with the resettlement of most of the IDPs and freedom of movement the services had been reduced to employ a staff of 110 as the need for medical services declined.
The Minister has instructed officials to send back the staff to their respective healthcare institutions they had been assigned before the endorsement to the NP Governor. The equipment and the unused stocks of medicine will also be handed over to the Governor, the Ministry spokesman said.
The Ministry review committee headed by Minister De Silva comprised acting Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilaka, Director General Dr. Ajith Mendis, Deputy Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala and other senior officials.
