India plans to open a consulate in Northern Sri Lanka

Jan 29, Colombo: India is planning to open a consulate soon in Sri Lanka's Tamil-dominated Jaffna to accelerate the reconstruction of the war-battered region, Indian officials have said.
According to the Indian officials, Sri Lankan government has approved the proposal to open the consulate in Jaffna. The request has been presented to the government soon after the end of the war.
India expects to promote the interaction between India and the Tamil population in Jaffna through the consulate. India says the move will increase the economic activities in the region and assist Sri Lanka in the reconstruction and rehabilitation process.
India has a high commission in Colombo and a consulate in Kandy. Sri Lanka has a high commission in New Delhi, a deputy high commission in Chennai, a consulate general in Mumbai and an honorary consul in Kolkata.
Immediately after the war India offered Sri Lanka $100 million (500 crore) aid package for the reconstruction works in the region and rehabilitation of the displaced civilians. India recently announced a $425 million credit line for the reconstruction of the Northern rail track.
