False SMS messengers arrested in Sri Lanka

Jan 28, Colombo: The defence authorities in Sri Lanka have arrested three people for spreading malicious rumors against the government and the President through the mobile Short Message Service (SMS), Director General of the Media Center for National Security, Lakshman Hulugalla announced.
At a media briefing held today at the MCNS, Hulugalla, unveiling the details of the conspiracy, said the arrested were supporters of the main opposition - United National Party at a Colombo.
The government has threatened to take action against the rumor mongers who were engaged in an electronic media campaign to discredit the government. These acts fall under the category 'Conspiracy against the Government', and are punishable offenses under the domestic law, the MCNS Director said.
Hulugalla said that defence authorities have received information about several other persons who were also a part of this clandestine move to disgrace the government.
"They will be taken into custody and legal proceedings initiated," he added.
