No move to arrest General Fonseka – Military spokesman

Jan 27, Colombo: There is no move by the Sri Lankan government to arrest the opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka or any of his political allies now holed up in a in a five star hotel in Colombo, the military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told media today.
However, he said that the large number of army deserters reportedly staying with Fonseka will be arrested soon.
Opposition presidential candidate and his close allies have expressed their fears over a possible government move to arrest them. According to foreign news agencies, Sarath Fonseka has been contacting them through telephone and trying to get the maximum publicity to the news since this morning (Jan 27).
An AFP report quoting his spokesman Mano Ganeshan said that the General is seeking protection from a 'neighbouring country' to guarantee his safety.
The report said the spokesman will be 'meeting a diplomat of a neighbouring country to seek assurances of the safety of Sarath Fonseka.'
According to government sources, the opposition candidate, along with his political allies, media crew, and his bodyguards moved to Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo last night.
The election results of the 2010 presidential election released so far has shown the certain defeat to the opposition candidate.
