Jan 24, Colombo: The Sri Lankan police department plans to deploy a heavy contingent of police officers to prevent violent poll related incidents before and after the presidential elections on January 26th and to ensure the safety of the public.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasooriya said a contingent of 85,000 police officers will be deployed to maintain law and order. Out of those 65,000 are to be deployed for election duty from today.
The IGP said each polling station will have two to three policemen on duty. The armed forces personnel also have been called to assist the policemen in the Northern and the Eastern provinces.
The IGP urged the public to safeguard their national identity cards as they have received information that certain groups are planning to steal them.
"We have reports that organized groups are planning to collect national identity cards of voters to impersonate them and vote. We have called the public to be alert on any attempts to collect these documents," the IGP said.
The public can provide any information on the emergency telephone number 119. All the police stations have been informed on this and they are vigilant, the IGP said.
The election on the 26th is the first presidential polls to be held under a unified country in 30 years after defeating the LTTE rule in the Northern and Eastern provinces in May 2009.
The election campaign which ended Saturday night was marred with violence, intimidations, and accusations.
According to the Election Secretariat, 14,088,500 registered voters will cast their ballots at 10,875 polling centers. The Election Commissioner expects nearly 80 percent voter turnout for the presidential polls on Tuesday.
