Jan 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today ceremoniously declared open the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex in Diyagama, Homagama.
Addressing the gathering the President dedicated the sports complex named in his honor to the children of the country.
"Any sportsman or sportswoman in the country from Dondra to Point Pedro could now engage in sports activities in any playground," the President said.
He told the thousands of students attended the opening ceremony to believe in themselves and to think big. He hoped the world class sports complex would help to create international caliber athletes from all over the country.
President Rajapaksa later took a ride in a golf cart on the track greeting the school children.
The sports complex consists of a synthetic track, soccer and rugby fields, two pavilions that can accommodate over 3000 spectators. In the second phase a international standard swimming pool, rifle range, a hostel to accommodate over 1,000 athletes, restaurants and a four-story administrative building will be built.
The sprawling 156-acre facility was built with the funds from the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Development Foundation. The 7th engineering services division of the Sri Lanka Army was in-charge of construction.
