Thu, Jan 21, 2010, 01:22 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa vowed not to allow any attempts to divide the country again and urged everyone to join to build a new Sri Lanka for the future generations of the country from the 27th.

Addressing a massive public rally at the Sanath Jayasuriya stadium in Matara on Wednesday, the President said the Sambandan-Fonseka agreement will be abolished on the 26th of this month and the country would be taken on a new path.

Recalling the terror brought about by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in the South during the 1988 – 90 period, the President said he will not allow any repetition of such violence again in the country.

He said that he made a promise to unite the country 4 years ago and he fulfilled that promise so that people can live without fear today.

The President said major development schemes were launched while the humanitarian operation was in progress and he will continue the economic development of the country exactly as he had done during the past four years.

The President said he would implement all policies pledged in the Mahinda Chintana policy program from January 27 itself just as he fulfilled the pledge to liberate the country from the LTTE terrorist group.

Speaking on the occasion Minister Rajitha Senarathne pointed out that poverty has been reduced up to 15 percent as the government did not curtail welfare measures even while the war was going on.

JHU Parliamentary group leader Ven Aturaliye Rathana Thera, Ministers Chandrasiri Gajadheera, Johnston Fernando, NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa, Cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, and actors Jackson Anthony and Malani Fonseka addressed the crowd.
