Jan 20, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea today to construct the second phase of a proposed solar park in the country's South.
The country's first ever grid connected 500kv solar power park is to be set up in Mirijjawila, in the Hambantota District.
The government has signed an agreement with the government of Japan to build the first phase of the solar park which is to provide to 400 kv of power at the same location.
With the completion of both phases the solar park would have the full generation capacity of one mega watt of electricity, which will be connected to the national grid.
According to the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), Krishan Deheregoda, the Ceylon electricity Board (CEB) will purchase the electricity and the payments received by the SLSEA will be utilized to provide houses in the remotest villages where the grid connection could not be reached, with solar PV panels.
SLSEA is mandated to promote alternative energies and solar is one of the most important energy sources to the country, the chairman said.
