Sri Lanka to spend $4 billion to develop the Northern region

Jan 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka plans to spend four billion dollars to develop the war-battered Northern region, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told the media today.
The government plans to build infrastructure including roads, and the northern rail track, restoration of tanks for irrigation, power generation, and restoration of once thrived industries in the region to uplift the region and the livelihoods of the inhabitants.
The projects are to be supported by the government funds and donor funds.
The government has similarly earmarked three billion dollars for the development of the Eastern Region liberated from the LTTE in 2007.
President Rajapaksa also plans to propose an arrangement for devolution of power to the Tamil minority and address their issues and grievances.
The President in a move to eliminate future threats to the unity of country has pledged to provide all citizens equal opportunities in the country that has been unified and give Tamils a more say in the legislature.
The government has restored the civil administration in the Eastern region and held provincial council elections in May 2008. It plans to hold elections in the Northern Province after the presidential elections.
As the polls are heating up for the presidency, the Tamil vote has become a decisive factor for the two main candidates.
In releasing his manifesto yesterday, the President said the Tigers are eliminated but the forces behind them remain and will try to resurrect the terror that plagued the country for 30 years. The President aims to eliminate that threat by uplifting the lives of the Tamil community.
