Tue, Jan 12, 2010, 09:48 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspected the Bandaragama-Panadura bridge linking Hirana in Panadura and Kidelpitiya in Bandaragama this morning and ordered it to be opened for public transport from today.

The two-lane bridge is 125 meters in length and 13 ½ meters in width. It has been constructed at a cost of 757 million rupees through a loan from Australia.

The bridge will benefit the people who use the ferry and help to ease congestion on the Galle Road from Panadura to Colombo. The bridge provides a shorter route for those who travel from Galle towards Maharagama, Homagama, Jayawardanapura and Kandy Road.

President Rajapaksa also opened the flyover bridge constructed over the Pannipitiya railway track, for public use today.

The 120-meter long, 4-lane flyover was built as a solution to ease the traffic congestion on the High Level Road.

The Ministry of Highways has constructed the flyover at a cost of 140 million rupees to minimize traffic congestion in Nugegoda, Maharagama, and Kottawa.

Minister Nandana Gunathilaka, Reginald Cooray, Secretary to Ministry of Highways Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda were present at the occasion
