Over 700 rehabilitated child soldiers in Sri Lanka get freedom

Jan 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today handed over 712 rehabilitated child soldiers of vanquished terrorist outfit LTTE to their parents at Manik Farm in Vavuniya.
The child soldiers who were conscripted by the LTTE and give weapons training were rehabilitated and trained in a vocation for future employment in the Vavuniya Social Welfare village.
Speaking at the occasion, President Rajapaksa said that an opportunity would never arise again for the children in North to fight for a terrorist organization, taking arms instead of a school bag.
The President said everyone should join hands and unite for a brighter future with no sound of gunfire and injured or dying civilians. The children should be granted a proper education and secure a dignified job, enabling them to lead a disciplined life.
A young generation respecting religious leaders and parents should be raised, the President said.
The children and the parents expressed their gratitude to the President for ensuring a secure life and a better future.
Ministers Milinda Moragoda, Douglas Devananda, Rishad Badurdeen, parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa, Bishop of Mannar Joseph Rayappu were also present.
