President inspects Colombo South port construction work

Jan 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the construction site of the Colombo Port South Harbour and inspected the progress of the development project this morning.
The proposed expansion of the Colombo South Harbour Project will build breakwaters, terminals, and channels within the Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) port limits.
The proposed harbour will have 4 terminals of over 1,200m in length each to accommodate 3 berths alongside depths of 18m and provision to deepen to 23m to accommodate deeper draft vessels of the future.
The first phase of development of the harbour will be carried out in two stages. The first stage of development involving the infrastructure at a cost of US$ 300 million is financed by public funds. Cost of the second stage for building other terminal facilities, estimated at US$ 700 million will be incurred by the private sector.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co of Korea has undertaken the contract for construction.
