* A tonne of explosives recovered in search operations in Northern Sri Lanka

Jan 05, Colombo: Sri Lankan Army troops conducting search operations have recovered a massive load of explosives from the former battlefields in Northern Sri Lanka.

During a combined operation the troops of 68 Division and the Terrorist Investigation Unit recovered 2,000 kg of explosives in the Vellamullavaikkal area of Mullaitivu.

In addition a variety of other war materials including 2,500 rounds of T-56 ammo, and video and computer equipment have been recovered from the site.

Form another site in the same area, the troops have found four T-56 weapons, one T-81 weapon, one M16 weapon and eight hand grenades among other items.

Meanwhile the troops of the 65 Division during search operations in the Oddusudan area yesterday (04) found sixteen hand grenades, two Anti Personnel mines, and four 60mm illumination mortar bombs among a cache of military items.

In Kilinochchi 57 Division troops recovered 3 RPG bombs and 7 Anti Personnel mines in Iranamadu area while the troops of the 63 Division recovered 22 Anti Personnel mines in Akkarayankulam area yesterday.

The troops of 61 Division conducting search operations in the Periyapandi Virichchan area of Vavuniya yesterday unearthed 48 Anti Personnel mines.

The Horizon De-mining team recovered 8 Anti Personnel mines during their demining activities in Palampiddi area of Vavuniya while the Danish demining team recovered another 34 Anti Personnel mines in Nochchikulam area yesterday.

The Anti Personnel mines buried by the LTTE terrorists pose the greatest risk to the displaced civilian population that is to be settled in those areas.
