Employers are required to grant leave for all the employees to vote on Sri Lanka's presidential polls

Jan 05, Colombo: Sri Lankan government today directed all the employers to grant leave for employees to cast their vote for the o=upcoming presidential elections.
The presidential polls are to take place on Tuesday, January 26th 2010 and the voting will commence at 7:00 a.m. and end at 4.00 p.m.
Issuing the directive the Election Secretariat said the employees who wish to vote during the working hours must apply for leave in writing and the employers must grant leave to any employee who applies in writing.
The employers are ordered to prepare a list of the employees who were granted the leave with the period of time they were allowed. The employer must determine the period of time available to employees to vote.
Employers who fail to do so will be guilty an offence and they will be produced for a trial before Magistrate. They will be liable to a maximum fine of 500 rupees and/or imprisonment, the directive states.
Both public and private sector employers are requested to comply with the legal requirement and grant leave to employees to cast their votes at the forthcoming Presidential Election.
