* Electoral system is not the problem today, Sri Lanka opposition leader says
Sun, Feb 28, 2010, 10:57 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 28, Colombo: There are burning issues that need to be addressed in the country and changing country's electoral system is not one of those, Sri Lanka opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said .

Addressing a public meeting yesterday in Ratnapura, the opposition leader said that for the government the biggest issue appears to be the current electoral system.

"Is it such a big deal to change the current electoral system?" the opposition leader asked.

Wickremasinghe said he met the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the parliament and discussed the issue of the electoral system and agreed to the proposals in this regard.

"If this was done before, it could have been effected for the general election." He said.

"We did not have issues pertaining to the preliminary amendments. There were only a few issues. Is the country's electoral system the big problem today," asked Mr. Wickremasinghe.

"Aren't people dying of hunger? Haven't their income levels reduced? Aren't children dying after being administered with injections? Hasn't education collapsed? Isn't the biggest issue the loss of GSP Plus? Haven't jobs been lost?" the opposition leader continued.

Wickremasinghe said the ruling party wants to take over the parliament now.

The opposition campaign has planned to hold a series of conventions at district level and yesterday's meeting at the Panavenna Estate in Kahawatta in Ratnapura District was the first one.
