Sri Lanka minister says ruling party fielded recognized individuals for election

Feb 28, Anuradhapura: Experienced individuals with national and international recognition have been nominated from the ruling United people's Freedom Alliance to contest the forthcoming general election, a government Minister said.
Addressing the first press conference after the nominations in Anuradhapura, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the main constituent of UPFA, Minister Maithripala Sirisena said the alliance candidates form all walks of life are included in their list for the parliamentary election.
According to the Minister only 6 percent of the candidates are women and 12 percent are youth. Vocationally 13 percent of candidates represent legal profession, 3 percent the medical profession, 2 percent the engineering profession and 6 percent the teaching profession.
Popular actress Geetha Kumarasinghe, legendary cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya and Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe are also contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections on the UPFA ticket.
At the press conference the minister pointed out that after 1948 the largest short term development took place under the present President.
The opposition parties, United National Party and Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna have deteriorated today due to poor political decisions, the Minister said.
Giving assurance that all measures will be taken for a peaceful election Minister Sirisena urged everyone to unite to defeat local and foreign conspiracies and create a strong parliament and cabinet.
