Political parties hand over national lists to Elections Commissioner

Feb 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major political parties handed over their national list of candidates to the Elections Commissioner today.
There are 19 slots in the 225-member Sri Lanka parliament reserved for the national lists candidates. Each party can submit 29 candidates from the national list. The number of national list members from each party is determined by the number of votes the party receives at the general election.
The National List from ruling United People's Freedom Party includes current Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, Ministers D.M. Jayaratna, Dullas Alahapperuma, Prof. G.L. Peiris M.H. Mohammad, Vishwa Warnapala, Dew Gunasekara, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, Geethanjana Gunawardena, Muttu Sivalingam, and Achala Jagoda and former Speaker W.J.M. Loku Bandara.
Other well-known personalities in the UPFA list include Ven. Ellawala Medhananda thera, Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha thera, Mohammad Musammil, Anuruddha Ratwatte, J.R.P. Sooriyapperuma, Jaanaka Priyantha Bandara, Prof. Rajiva Wijesinghe, A.H.M. Azwer, Sarath Kongahage and actress Malini Fonseka.
Most notables in the national list from the opposition United National Front included its General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Iran Wickramarathna, Joseph Michael Perera, Norm Choksy, Rukman Senanayaka, Tilak Marapana, economist Harsha de Silva, and Prof. Wimal Gunawardena.
