Defeated Sri Lanka presidential candidate files petition to annul election results

Feb 26, Colombo: Sharmila Perera ,the Secretary of the New Democratic Front (NDF), the party led by defeated presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka, today filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to annul the presidential election results of four districts.
The petitioner says the January 26th presidential election results from the districts of Matale, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, and Ratnapura should be annulled and recounted due to incidents of vote rigging and voter-threatening.
Elections Commissioner and other election officials have been named as respondents.
The Election Commissioner and the election monitors have vehemently denied of any malpractices in the counting process.
The incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa won the 2010 presidential election with a wide margin of nearly 18 percent equivalent to 1.8 million votes.
