* Sri Lanka police to deploy 65,000 officers for poll security

Feb 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police department will department will deploy some 65,000 officers to provide security to the polling stations and District Secretariats in the country on the day of the upcoming general election.

The Department will put in place a comprehensive security blanket covering the all districts in the country in co-ordination with the Armed Forces during the election campaign, police spokesman Superintendent of Police Prishantha Jayakody said.

The Police Department also for the first time has ordered the police officers who are providing security to the candidates at public rallies to be in uniform to distinguish them easily from ordinary masses.

The Police Department has received several complaints from the public that some police officers are in civil attire, the Spokesman said.

The Spokesman explained that the public cannot distinguish the police officers among them when they are in civil clothes and the police officers have also faced a number of difficulties when they are providing security at public rallies.
