* Sri Lanka main opposition finalizes its nomination list
Thu, Feb 25, 2010, 10:06 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition alliance United National Front (UNF) said it has finalized the nomination list of the candidates for the 22 districts (UNF) contesting the forthcoming General Election under the elephant symbol.

The UNF candidates are to hand over their nominations today and tomorrow. According to party officials, nominations for many divisions of Colombo are expected to be handed over today while others will be done tomorrow.

The leader of the opposition alliance, Ranil Wickremasinghe, will be contesting as the leader of the Colombo District group, the UNF announced.

The UNF waited for the last minute to finalize its nominations hoping the defeated presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka and his Democratic National Alliance would accept UNF's invitation to join them as its deputy leader.

However, Fonseka rejected the invitation and signed the nominations to contest under the alliance he formed with the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.

The UNF includes the single-member parties of Mangala Samaraweera's SLFP-Mahajana wing and Mano Ganeshan's Democratic People's Front and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress led by Rauf Hakeem

The uneasy coalition formed between the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the constituent parties of the UNF fell apart after the presidential election weakening the opposition's stand against the ruling United People's Freedom Front government which expects to sweep the General Election with a two-third majority.
