Tue, Feb 23, 2010, 08:53 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 23, Moragahakanda: This government will feel the pulse of the country's people and have an indigenous approach to empathize with the concerns and issues of its people as opposed to those who remain enslaved by foreign masters providing them with monies to accomplish various external agendas, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today.

"The daunting task ahead of the nation will be accomplished through the strength and commitment of its people possessed by his government rather than financial strength," the President said this evening when he visited Moragahakanda to observe the construction of the Moragahakanda Tank under the massive Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga project.

The President noted that over the last 4 years, his government revitalized the agricultural sector which had been neglected over the past 4 decades providing the opportunity to regain the local irrigation engineering expertise the country had lost due to the brain drain and channel it towards a massive irrigation project.

Moragahakanda - Kalu Ganga Development Project is the largest reservoir project to be taken up for development under the Mahaweli River Development Programme. The construction work of the project began in 2007.

The project aims to provide irrigation water facilities to 81,422 hectares in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka benefitting over 100,000 families.

Under the project two major reservoirs namely, Moragahakanda and Kalu Ganga reservoirs, will be constructed for the irrigation in the area and to provide potable and industrial water supply to North Central and Eastern Provinces. Nearly 100,000 farming families will benefit from this massive project. The capacity of the Moragahakanda reservoir stands at 1,000,570 cubic meters. The Kalu Ganga reservoir to be built under this project will have a capacity of 1,000,265 cubic meters.

The project also includes an electricity power house of 20 MW installed capacity.

Two bridges constructed under the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga project across the Amban River were vested in the public today.

The project will pave way for a new development era for Polonnaruwa and Medirigiriya areas. Around 30,000 acres of land in Medirigiriya area are to be developed at a cost of 12 billion rupees. New lands will also be provided to 12,000 farmer families in the area.

The governments of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Japan as well as OPEC organization has come forward to provide necessary funds for the massive agro project, estimated to cost US dollars 557 million..

President Rajapaksa also said that the government foresaw the impending food shortages and took remedial action. This programme and all other campaigns have seen success due to the strength of the people who rallied around him, the President added.

The President pointed out that the people rallying around him gave him the strength to surmount diverse challenges. The President assured his commitment to overcome future challenges as well, as a government which understands the hearts of the people.

The Moragahakanda - Kalu Ganga development project will be vested in public today by President Mahinda Rajapakse. This is the country’s largest ever agro development project to be implemented.

Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Siripala Gamlath, Rohana Kumara Dissanayake, S. M Chandrasena, Chandrasiri Suriyarachchi and the Governor of the Eastern Province Mohan Wijewickrema also participated.
