Feb 16, Colombo: The Nugegoda Magistrate Court has ordered the release of Chandana Sirimalwattha, Chief Editor of Marxist newspaper 'Lanka' after being detained for 18 days.
Nugegoda Magistrate Anura Kumara has issued the order when the Criminal Investigations Department produced the journalist in courts today.
The CID said Sirimalwattha was taken into custody on suspicion that his newspaper had received funds from either a domestic or foreign terrorist organization. However, the CID has not found any evidence to support the suspicions and requested the Court to order his release.
Earlier in the day Sri Lanka President intervened on the journalist's behalf and ordered the Inspector general of Police to either release him or bail or file charges.
Sirimalwatta, who was arrested last month when he went to the CID to make a statement responding to a request by the CID officials, filed a petition at the Supreme Court yesterday saying that his fundamental rights have been violated.
