Sri Lankan government to buy paddy harvest in the East, Jaffna self sufficient with rice

Feb 15, Colombo: Sri Lankan government will begin purchasing of paddy from the Maha harvest today, the Ministry of Agriculture announced.
The Paddy Marketing Board will start the program from the East buying the paddy from five centers located in the Ampara district, the Ministry secretary S. Amarasekara said.
A kilo of Nadu would be purchased at Rs. 28 and a kilo of Samba, at Rs. 30. A sum of four billion rupees has been allocated for the purchases.
The government expects to purchase 35,000 metric tons from the Ampara district and 50,000 metric tons from the Polonnaruwa District. The government expects to purchase about 140,000 metric tons of paddy from the farmers during the Maha season.
The government has already prepared the storage facilities for the paddy stocks.
Meanwhile the paddy harvest in Jaffna peninsula is now in progress, the government said. Over 4,000 acres of paddy lands in Chavakachcheri area is being harvested now.
The government says a large number of abandoned paddy lands in the peninsula have been re-cultivated under the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" programme and the residents in Jaffna are now self sufficient with rice.
