Fri, Feb 12, 2010, 05:40 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 12, Colombo: [Update:] Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe this morning met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President's House to urge the release of former military commander and the defeated presidential candidate General Fonseka.

A press statement issued by the UNP said the opposition leader was told by the President that a preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Army against General Fonseka, and when it is over, the Army Commander will take early steps for his release.

The President has added that as there is a fundamental rights petition filed in the Supreme Courts in this regard, his release can be made following the Court's decision.

The Opposition leader has requested that he be granted special permission to meet the General.

The Supreme Court is to take up the fundamental right petition filed seeking his release today.
