* Sri Lanka President's son enters politics

Feb 11, Tangalle: Sri Lanka President's 23-year-old eldest son, Namal Rajapaksa launched his political career today with his parent's blessings at their ancestral town of Tangalle.

Following religious observances this morning conducted by the Chief Incumbent of the Tissamaharama temple, the Ven. Devalegama Dhammasena thera Namal Rajapaksa signed the official document initiating political activities before President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa addressing a public meeting held at the Tangalle Town Hall to mark the inauguration said he considers it to be a privilege to address the same people who blessed him when he launched his political career in the 1970s today when his son inaugurates his political life.

The President pointed out that everyone has the right to engage in politics but no one has the right to betray the country again to terrorism or destroy a country's peace.

He noted that the politics is not the use of thuggish acts or acts of revenge. The recent presidential election put a stop to politics which engaged in intimidating the public, he said.

At the meeting Namal Rajapaksa assured his commitment to build the country joining hands with youth representing all communities, religions, and castes.

Prior to addressing the gathering Namal Rajapaksa visited the statue of his grandfather D.A. Rajapaksa and offered floral tributes.

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa and Johnston Fernando, Provincial Council Member Nishantha Muthuhettigama and J.R.P. Sooriyapperuma were also present at the event.
